Engelska idiom
Idiom (idioms) är ungefär detsamma som uttryck, fast mer särpräglade för ett visst språk. Idiom i svenskan som ”pricken över i:et” och ”sakta i backarna” är inte alltid enkla att förstå för de med svenska som andraspråk. Samma sak gäller engelska uttryck av liknande art för de med engelska som andraspråk.
Denna avdelning är en växande samling engelska idiom som förklaras med adekvat svensk översättning samt exemplifieras från typiska sammanhang. Idiom som det finns rena översättningar av i svenskan är inte medtagna. Idiom följer inte alltid grammatikens regler och är fasta uttryck som är bra att känna till.
Cope with

Exempel

Cope with kan också användas i en näralliggande, men samtidigt något olik betydelse: mäta sig med. Denna betydelse är i form av att klara av något.

A great deal
Svensk översättning är en hel del.
Ordet great ska här förstås i betydelsen av mycket och inte bra. I övrigt är det ett uttryck som har en relativt genomgående användning och lär inte ställa till några direkta svårigheter när du väl känner till dess betydelse.
Exempel
I know a great deal about it.
They do take a great deal of risk with this.
That says a great deal about our attitude in this case.
Det finns dock fall där det inte går att använda den exakta översättning som gavs ovan även om själva betydelsen är densamma, som i exemplet ”It didn't really achieve a great deal”, där a great deal i stället kan översättas till ”så mycket”.
Before long
Svensk översättning är inom kort.
Detta idiom är logiskt för engelsktalande, men för de som är mer ovana kan det tyckas motstridigt med att long ordagrant översätts till kort. Det är ovanligt i vardagstal, men kan förekomma i litterära och vetenskapliga texter. Tänk på detta idiom som ”före en lång tid hinner passera”. Before long förekommer ofta i början eller i slutet av satser.

Before long, she was back again.
These could also turn into another mass market before long.

Let alone
Svenska översättningar är för att inte tala om, än mindre.
Uttrycket inleder ofta en bisats, på samma sätt som motsvarande uttryck gör i svenskan.
Exempel
None of these arguments is notably strong, let alone conclusive.
There was no system of formalized instruction for rock, let alone rock guitar solos.
Most policemen and women at Easton have not even drawn their gun, let alone fired it.

Come to an end
Svensk översättning är få ett slut.
Ett vanligt engelskt uttryck är ”it must come to an end”, vilket på svenska kan översättas till ”det måste få ett slut”. Detta är ett idiom där översättningen är relativt lättförståelig. Ibland är översättningen i stället ”få/fått sitt slut”.

In broad terms
Svensk översättning är på det stora hela.
Uttrycket ”in broad terms”, används om något som gäller ospecifikt och i allmänna termer.
Exempel
I would you to be quite specific, not just speak in broad terms.
The government were willing to discuss race only in broad terms.
And the answer, in broad terms is yes.
The chief director discussed in broad terms how he plans to do the project.
Make sense
Svensk översättning är vettigt.
Uttrycket ”it make sense” betyder att något låter vettigt eller rimligt.
Exempel
It just didn't make sense.
Now it all starts to make sense!
It is one of the ways to make sense of complex information.
That will do
Svensk översättning är det räcker så.
Idiomet "That will do" uttrycker att något är tillräckligt. En mer formell formulering med likadan betydelse är "That is enough".
